3. Leitmotifs as Embodied Metaphors in Opera and Film Music

By referring to central characters, objects, or movements of the visual layer, leitmotifs gain metaphorical meaning, especially when they are linked to certain characters, be it in opera or film. Because leitmotifs may illustrate and imitate bodily motions even in an onomatopoetic way, they can be perceived as embodied metaphors.
