3. Leitmotifs as Embodied Metaphors in Opera and Film Music
By referring to central characters, objects, or movements of the visual layer, leitmotifs gain metaphorical meaning, especially when they are linked to certain characters, be it in opera or film. Because leitmotifs may illustrate and imitate bodily motions even in an onomatopoetic way, they can be perceived as embodied metaphors. Discussing the leitmotif as a musical metaphor, first of all it is necessary to explain the concept of leitmotifs in more detail within the context of opera and film music.
